Guitar Types – The Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar is also known as the western guitar. It has six steel strings and produces a full, smooth, warm and quite metallic sound (this depends on the type of strings you put on it though).

This type of guitar is used in the most popular pop and western music.

It is a little bit more difficult to play compared to an electric because the strings are further from the fretboard.

There is one big advantage though. You only need your guitar in order to play some great music, while you need an amplifier when you want to play on an electric. This type of guitar is great for playing outside (like a camping or a park for instance). There are also acoustics available which you can play through an amplifier as well (these are called acoustic electrics). Sometimes these guitars have a great sound when plugged in, but they do not sound so great when played acoustic because of the thinner body. Just try before you buy…

Among acoustic guitars there are a lot of differences in the materials which are used to make an instrument.

Some guitars have a laminated top, while others have a solid top (which is much better according to a lot of people, but it is more expensive as well). Some types of wood are better than others as well.

Basically there are 3 different price ranges of acoustic guitars: beginner guitars, ‘better’ guitars for intermediate players and high-end guitars. There are also different shapes available: the concert shape, the auditorium shape, the dreadnought shape and the jumbo shape. There are also a lot of different colours and prints available and you can even get your own custom made guitar. Your choice depends on your personal preferences. Try every type so you know which one is best for you.

Most acoustic guitars have a pick guard to protect the top from “plectrum scratches”.
